Prince
Prince, the legendary, talented, rule breaking, fashion foreword, actor, and musician has passed. What a sad time for all his beloved fans. I remember rocking out to Raspberry Beret, Let’s go Crazy, When Dove’s Cry, and Purple Rain as a kid. Prince marked my time from an elementary school girl to a slightly rebellious teenager (is there any other kind?). I use to watch videos of him perform on Youtube and thought, “wow, what an amazingly talented human being”. Being a musician myself, I marveled at his song writing ability. He tested the boundaries and at many times broke the norms of society. He didn’t care what people thought about his sexuality, his songs, his fashion choices, he was Prince and he knew in his very being that God, the Universe, a higher power, aliens, his parents, whatever you choose, made him just the way he was suppose to be. He wasn’t going to let the harsh expectations of society influence him to be any different. That’s what I loved about Prince. He never fell victim, at least publicly, to the negative feedback he received throughout his life. He graced the world not only with well composed and well played music, but also showed us not to be someone else for anyone else.
Now days we are so influenced by the pressures of society that we don’t wear or say what we feel is right within us, but if there is anyone to call upon in a time of creative insecurity it is Prince. Let his image and the mark he left on the world help you find your inner Prince. Man or woman; child or adult; gay, bisexual, transgender, lesbian, or straight. Express yourself! Don’t let negative criticism stop you. Can we for a minute, just appreciate Prince for who he was and the music he created? Can we just learn from him and take what he gave the world with appreciation? Why is the media so concerned, rather obsessed, with whether or not his death was an overdose or if he was addicted to pain medicine? We should just be happy that someone as talented as he, was able to show us some funky light in this, sometimes, drab world. Prince, may you rest in ever musically inclined, fashion foreword, and rule breaking peace. RIP.
